Stories that Purify the Heart
The Bhagavat Katha at ISKCON Hadapsar is our humble effort to bring the living message of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam into people’s hearts. Srila Prabhupāda often reminded us that Krishna’s words have power even when heard for a short time. He once said, “Simply by hearing, you will become purified.” This is the mood behind every Katha — to sit together, listen together, and let the sound of Krishna’s pastimes quiet the noise of daily life. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam confirms this transformation: “Kṛṣṇa… cleanses desire for material enjoyment from the heart of the devotee who has developed the urge to hear His messages.” (SB 1.2.17)
Each session begins with a soft, welcoming kirtan so that everyone can settle down peacefully. We then read and explain selected verses in simple language, so even first-time listeners can understand the message easily. When Guru Maharaj sits and reads the Bhāgavatam, it naturally creates a very warm and devotional atmosphere. His presence helps everyone focus, and many devotees say that even one sentence heard in his voice touches their heart deeply. Srila Prabhupāda wrote, “All problems are solved by hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.” That is why we encourage people to attend regularly — not as a rule, but because hearing again and again gives real strength and clarity.

The discussions often become personal and relatable. We talk about how ancient teachings apply to modern life — to students, families, working professionals, or anyone facing challenges. Prabhupāda explained, “Krishna consciousness is not artificial. It is already there within the heart.” Hearing together simply uncovers what is already inside. The atmosphere becomes especially sweet during Krishna’s childhood pastimes or the stories of great devotees. Prabhupāda said that such hearing “awakens our dormant love for God.” (Kṛṣṇa Book Introduction) Many people share afterwards that they felt lighter, calmer, and more connected.
We end with a short kirtan and prasadam, keeping the mood gentle and family-like. Prabhupāda always encouraged honest questioning, saying, “Try to understand this philosophy by questioning.” (BG 4.34 lecture) So people are free to ask doubts or share experiences. Whether someone is new or experienced, young or old, everyone is welcome to join. As Prabhupāda beautifully said, “This is not a sectarian movement; it is meant for every human being.” Our hope is simple — that each Katha brings you a little closer to Krishna and brings a little more peace into your home.
